Abstract
This study aiming to take precautions against frost and to increase the temperatures of both the root region and the surrounding of the tomato plant in glasshouse was carried out in 1988 and 1989.

The combinations of low polyethylene tunnel and various mulches were tested during the short season growing periods as: (a) low polyethylene (PE) tunnel, (b) black PE mulch + low PE tunnel, (c) transparent PE mulch + low PE tunnel and (d) control.
There were no significant differences in the yield and fruit quality but the variations in temperature showed that constructing tunnels within the glasshouse is an effective way for frost protection.
