Abstract
Conventional methods of virus purification have been shown to be inadequate for obtaining purified aphidborne strawberry viruses retaining biological activity and/or for obtaining them in quantities needed for the production of antisera.
Here we report preliminary results on the purification by non-conventional methods of strawberry mottle virus (SMV) and strawberry crinkle virus (SCV). We combined conventional centrifugation steps with ultrafiltration, gel filtration chromatography and zone electrophoresis.
After the use of ultrafiltration and gel filtration chromatography, SMV preparations retained biological activity.
The procedure employed for SCV also gave preparations retaining high levels of biological activity and they contained sufficient virus material to eventually develop a detection method.
