Abstract
Arabis mosaic virus was detected in all hop growing areas of South and Southwest Germany.
The region of Spalt and cv.
Spalter were shown to be significantly more infected than other areas or cultivars respectively.
Only in the region of Spalt were dagger nematodes (Xiphinema diversicaudatum) found in hop gardens.
Transmission of ArMV-H at a low level was demonstrated by nematodes, Cuscuta europaea, grafting and mechanical means and some evidence was provided for pollen and seed transmission.
The German ArMV-H was detectable using different polyclonal ArMV-antisera, but not all isolates were detected with monoclonal antibodies highly specific for Belgian ArMV-H. Reinfection data indicate that the use of virus-free planting material is a good tool to control ArMV. Infection with ArMV-H seems to be latent in the hops tested as no correlation was found to any disorder observed.
