OCCURRENCE OF STRAWBERRY MILD YELLOW-EDGE ASSOCIATED VIRUS IN WILD FRAGARIA CHILOENSIS IN SOUTH AMERICA

Abstract
One hundred and nine clones of wild Fragaria chiloensis (L.) Duch. collected at different sites in the south of Chile were graft-indexed on F. vesca L. cv.
Alpine for virus detection.
Several kinds of virus-like symptoms, including some typical of those described for strawberry mild yellow-edge disease (SMYED), were observed in Alpine plants grafted from 73 of the 109 F. chiloensis clones.
Using non-viruliferous Chaetosiphon sp. aphids, we were able to transmit the causal agent or agents of SMYED from leaf-grafted, symptom-bearing Alpine plants to three of eight inoculated F. vesca cv.
UC-4 plants.
The potexvirus associated with SMYED was readily detected by immunospecific electron microscopy in four of four dried leaf samples of F. chiloensis that indexed positive for SMYED on Alpine plants.
This is the first published report of the occurrence of SMYED and the potexvirus associated with it in wild F. chiloensis in South America.
