Abstract
Specific breeding programs have not been developed yet for ornamental palms, but some simple procedures may aid to conserve their genetic variability.
A breeding program concerned with Bactris gasipaes is being carried out simultaneously by three institutions: Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia, Instituto Agronômico de Campinas, and FCAV-UNESP. The objective is to maintain a gemplasm bank in vivo and select a spineless pejibaye variety for heart-of-palm production adapted to the northern region, and to the State of São Paulo.
In addition, basic aspects of biology and development of pejibaye are being studied.
In this project, 319 families of half-sibs are being evaluated in each institution.
The results indicate that the studied progenies have sufficient genetic variability to allow selection of genotypes adequate for heart production.
