METHODS AND LIMITS FOR MEASUREMENT OF MECHANICAL LOAD ON FRUITS AND VEGETABLES IN HARVEST AND POST-HARVEST PERIOD

Abstract
The production of high quality fruits and vegetables requires reduction of mechanical stress in harvest and post-harvest period.
Optimized handling processes should guarantee to harvest riper and more tasteful fruits and vegetables but on the other hand softer and more susceptible to damage.

Different measuring devices exist for detection of dynamic and static load of the produce.
These so-called "artificial fruits" differ in their geometrical and mechanical properties.

In this paper the american sphere IS 100 and the german sphere PMS-60, developed in the Institute of Agricultural Engineering in Bornim, were compared for several load conditions.
IS 100 detects only dynamic and static load (acceleration) of the sphere in three axes.
PMS-60 detects dynamic and static load (internal fluid pressure) of the sphere.
The results are discussed.
