EFFECTS OF PACLOBUTRAZOL ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF LOW CHILL PEACHES IN SUBTROPICAL AUSTRALIA

Abstract
The growth retardant, paclobutrazol, applied as a soil and collar drench in the autumn was evaluated for its effects on subsequent growth and yield of the low chill peach cultivar Flordaprince in the first year after treatment.
Paclobutrazol reduced shoot extension appreciably by stonehardening (57% reduction) and at harvest (47.6% reduction) and increased fruit size (12.7%), yield (22.1%) and yield per unit canopy volume (59.1%). The improvement in fruit size appears to be due to a reduction in competition between vegetative and reproductive growth.
Both leaf K levels and trunk starch levels at stone-hardening were negatively linearly correlated with yield per unit canopy volume (r=0.84; 0.64, respectively, P < 0.05).
