Abstract
During 1986, the symptoms characteristic of fire blight were observed for the first time in Macedonia.
The observations have been done at an orchard of quince near the Greece border and at an orchard of pear near Radovish.
The following three years were the years of fire blight spreading in Macedonia.
So, with 1991 more than 400 ha of pear orchards and more than 60 ha of quince orchards have been eradicated.
This disease was also noted on apple and Crataegus trees.
The different cultivars of pear show different susceptibility to the disease. Erwinia amylovora Burr. (Winsl. et al.) was isolated from pear and quince.
The morphological and physiological characteristics of some isolates have been studied.
For the control of fire blight we used: copper sulfate, copper oxychloride, copper hydroxide and streptomycin sulfate.
