Abstract
The application of the water content vs. suction curves leads to a water management and monitoring scheme for two lysimeters growing roses, cvs.
Ilseta and Jaguar under a natural-ventilation greenhouse.
The soil physical properties were obtained at three depths in each of the lysimeters and a battery of tensiometers installed to monitor soil suction values.
Drip irrigation was applied whenever the average suction at 10 cm reached 10 cbar, and drainage quantity was recorded.
A water balance model was developed to predict evapotranspiration and drainage outflow.
Crop coefficients were obtained by calculating Penman-Monteith potential evapotranspiration values inside the greenhouse.
A correlation of water uptake values with outdoor radiation measurements was made in order to automate the irrigation system.
Results show a good correlation between mean monthly ET vs. outdoor radiation values (r=0.63–0.88) but poor correlation between daily ET values and outdoor radiation (r=0.22–0.35), which indicates that radiation alone might not be a good irrigation criteria for greenhouses in the area, particularly those with little environmental control.
