Abstract
Up to now, major rose breeding companies throughout the world have used well experienced traditional hybridization and selection methods in their varietal creation practice.
Some of them have, during the past ten years, undergone integrated or associate research programs in order to possibly improve their methodology.
At Selection Meilland, we have focused more specially on sexual reproduction (from pollination to seed germination), post harvest physiology, and new in vitro technics such as somatic enbryogenesis or early embryo rescue.
The most fundamental part of these works has been published.
This research effort has noticeably led to: an average increase of progenies obtained per cross; an early (and previsional) screening, among large populations, of varietal post harvest abilities; the introduction in our selection programs of varieties bred through new in vitro technics: an increased success in interspecific hybridization programs.
