PATHOLOGISTS’ CONTRIBUTION TO STRATEGIES FOR PRODUCING PATHOGEN-FEE ROSE MATERIAL

Abstract
Rose cultures, vegetatively propagated by cuttings or grafted on rootstocks, are frequently infected by fungal, bacterial or viral pathogens which are spread along with contaminated plant material.
Serious diseases have developed recently for which there is no curative method available.
The sanitation of rose cultures by the selection and multiplication of healthy plants then becomes necessary.
The development of detection methods for several pathogens makes it possible to select the initial material and to follow its sanitary condition during multiplication.
Furthermore rules for reducing contamination risks in culture are derived from epidemiological studies.
