Abstract
The current studies started since 1990 for vegetable crop production under plastics in the Experimental Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt.
This is in accordance with the trend of the new agricultural policy which concentrates on clean food product with high quality for local as well as export markets.
One of the main studies is the standard vegetable seedling production without serious virus infection, through modifying the plastic greenhouse structure.
The modified structure which was designed and erected in Kafr ElSheikh was made from wooden frame to cover an area of 630 m2 with 4.0 m height in the middle.
The PE sheet cover the roof only, while all sides (3.0 m height) were covered with insect proof PP nets supplied by Tildenet Co.
This structure provide an excellent ventilation and completely prevented any entrance of insects including the white fly.
The results obtained from tomato seedlings introduced under this condition and cultivated under open field conditions Balteem area during late summer season 1994 were positive.
Also, there are studies for producing cucumbers under plastic house in local organic substrate (straw bales). The best results were obtained from half buried straw bales treatment during winter season 1991 and 1992 and from full buried straw bales treatment during spring cultivation of 1991. The increase of total yield were 0.7 and 0.33 kg/plant in winter and spring cultivations respectively than control plants.
The evaluation of organic farming methods for tomato production under plastic tunnels during winter season of 1994/1995 were started.
The preliminary results shows the possibility of economic tomato production by using this method in heavy clay soil.
This is in accordance with the trend of the new agricultural policy which concentrates on clean food product with high quality for local as well as export markets.
