Abstract
Water stress trials were carried out over a three-year period in order to investigate the effects of water stress on assimilation, production and vegetative activity of hazelnut.
With reduced water volumes, with respect to crop needs, the negative effects of water stress on assimilation and production were inevitable as the hazelnut shows itself to be rather sensitive to water lack.
In June soil water availability higher than 60–65% of total available water induced a higher degree of transpiration without increasing photosynthesis therefore representing a likely waste of water.
However fruit size was increased showing that the period of rapid fruit growth in diameter (June) seems to be particularly sensitive to water lack.
Optimal level water supply was between 0.7 and 1 ETM (maximum evapotranspiration of the crop) and controlled water stress strategies did not seem to be suitable for the hazelnut.
Results were transformed into practical advice for water management of the crop.
