Abstract
Hazelnuts are a minor crop in Australia.
Production is less than 20% of total consumption with the balance being imported.
Hazelnut groves are principally located in the south-eastern part of the country, where soils and climate are favourable.
The development of hazelnut growing and the factors limiting production are discussed.
A research program aimed at identifying better adapted, more productive cultivars is described.
