Abstract
119 cultivars from 12 different countries held in the hazelnut germplasm bank of IRTA-Mas Bové, were characterised by electrophoresis of isozymes.
This species showed a high level of polymorphism allowing the identification with a unique genotype most of the cultivars studied (62%).
This species showed a high level of polymorphism allowing the identification with a unique genotype most of the cultivars studied (62%).
Common parameters to measure genetic variability like mean proportion of polymorphic loci (L), mean number of alleles at the average polymorphic locus (A), average heterozigosity (HET) and genetic identity of pairs of populations (I), were estimated to analyse genetic variability among hazelnut cultivars.
Results showed that the level of polymorphism in hazelnut (L=0.66) is similar to that known in some other allogamous species.
There is a high level of genetic variability (A=2.8) and the high level of heterozigosity (HET=0.23) can be very useful for breeding purposes.
Genetic identity (I=0.95), suggested that all hazelnut cultivars belong to a single species, Corylus avellana L.
