Abstract
Eight cultivars of date pam from Algeria were differentiated using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers obtained by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A set of 50 random sequence 10-mer primers were tested.
A selection of six primers produced 31 polymorphic bands of between 300 to 1300 base pairs in size sufficient to distinguish between the cultivars.
A combination of all the electrophoretic profiles allows a specific identification of each cultivar Genetic similarities between cultivars were calculated and cluster analysis was used to generate a dendogram showing the relationships between them.
The variation detected between cultivars is not associated with their geographical repartition.
RAPD technology provided a new alternative for cultivar identification.
