Abstract
A total of 253 Indonesian sweet potato clones collected from different agroecosystems of Sumatera, Java, and Irian Jaya were evaluated in experimental plots for yield potential, tuber nutritional value, and resistance to major foliar diseases.
For sweet potato germplasm utilization and enhancement purposes, 110 clones were selected as a working collection.
Twenty-eight selected clones from that collection and two check varieties were further evaluated for yield, nutritional value, and disease resistance stability, at six locations (differing in altitude, 45–1550 meters above sea level) for two seasons.
This evaluation identified 6 sweet potato clones which have the potential for a hybridization program to create new sweet potato varieties with higher dry matter content.
Two orange flesh clones have the potential for breeding cultivars with orange flesh tubers, higher carotene, dry matter, protein, and sugar contents.
Two sweet potato clones, one from Sumatera (S-138) and one from Java (B-088) had higher yield (13 – 25 ton/ha and 13 – 20 ton/ha), good nutritional values, and resistance to scab disease.
These clones could be used as new sweet potato cultivars.
