Abstract
Seakale (Crambe maritima L.) seeds germinate very slowly with a low germination percentage due to the influence of seed dormancy and slow water imbibition because of a thick and hard seed integument.
A series of three experiments were carried out to explore the best pre-treatment for improving seed germination.
From these experiments, we found that: (1) decortication of seeds can greatly improve germination; (2) soaking seeds in a solution of 0.025% gibberellic acid for 18 hours had the best effect on germination and seedling growth; and (3) soaking seeds in a solution of 10% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for 5 minutes can also improve germination and reduce seedling mortality.
