Abstract
Seven cultivars of asparagus were tested for adaptability and yield performance in Polomolok, South Cotabato, Philippines during 1995 and 1996. UC-157 (the commercial variety), Jersey Giant, Jersey Knight, Apollo, Atlas, Grande, and Viola were evaluated.
Atlas proved to be the best cultivar due to the production of the highest yield (11,289 kg/ha) of Dole grade (premium) spears in these comparisons.
Following Atlas, in order of Dole grade spear yields were Viola (10,504 kg/ha), Grande (9,803 kg/ha), Apollo (7,816 kg/ha), UC 157 (7,649 kg/ha), Jersey Giant (5,812 kg/ha) and Jersey Knight (5,645 kg/ha). Spear quality influenced the marketable yields of spears, i.e., Jersey Giant produced the most spear weight but had the lowest percentage of Dole grade spears while Atlas had both high spear weight yields and a high percentage of Dole grade spears.
