Abstract
The potential of yeast Candida oleophila and its extracellular polymers (EP) for control of the blue mould (Penicillium expansum) on stored apricots was assessed in vitro and on fruits.
Isolated EP of C. oleophila inhibited in vitro spore germination and germ tube elongation of P. expansum. It also inhibited infection when applied to surface wounds of apricot inoculated with the pathogen.
The effect of prestorage dip in yeast suspension or surface coating with EP alone or in a combination with fungicide thiabendazole (TBZ) on control of natural infections following storage was also examined.
The effect of yeast treatments was comparable with a low concentration of TBZ; the combination however reduced the incidence of blue mould in stored apricots with a greater effect to EP plus TBZ.
