Abstract
The chestnut cultivar ‘Colossal’ was introduced for trial into the Piemonte Region of Italy in 1992. ‘Colosal’ is the leading commercial chestnut culitivar in California and is one of the most important North American chestnut varieties.
Its performance characteristics in Italy, based on observations of trees in their sixth growing season, allow it to be ranked favorably with other commercially available hybrid chestnut cultivars.
The grafted trees have grown vigorously and began fruiting during second year in the orchard.
Nuts of ‘Colossal’ ripen between 18 and 20 September in Cuneo province.
The burs contain an average 2.3 nuts.
The nuts are very large, averaging about 40 nuts/kg.
More than 70% of them fall tree from the burs when ripe.
The nuts are a rich mahogany color, are lightly striped and the seeds are only very rarely divided into multiple embryos.
