Charles R. Burnham proposed the breeding of blight-resistant American chestnuts via the backcross method of breeding and the ultimate goal to «establish breeding populations of blight resistant American chestnuts, each of which will be adapted to a different growth zone in the natural range». We assume that local adaptation of American chestnut, an unknown parameter, can be achieved by backcross breeding methodology.
In 1995, the Pennsylvania Chapter – The American Chestnut Foundation initiated a backcross breeding program to produce blight-resistant American chestnuts with adaptation to Pennsylvania.
Breeding strategies, cultural methods, progress to date, and future challenges of this regional backcross breeding program will be presented.
