Abstract
The expression of the pathogenesis related genes (PR-genes) PR2, PR3, PR4, PR5 as well as acid and basic class III chitinase was measured in chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) by northern blots using heterologous probes for tobacco PR genes, after infection with the phytopathogenic fungus Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr. and with an isogenic hypovirulent (hv) strain of this fungus or after wounding.
Virulent (v) Cryphonectria parasitica, the causal agent of chestnut blight, and wounding stimulated the expression of PR-genes to a lesser extent than the hv form.
This leads us to the conclusion that not only reduced virulence, but also a stronger defence reaction of the tree is responsible for the weaker symptoms, and finally for the survival of trees infected with the hv fungus.
