Abstract
Ethylene is a key factor in kiwifruit ripening.
Since ethylene is also an air pollutant we have studied the question if atmospheric ethylene is something to consider during international kiwifruit fruit handling.
Overseas locations near industrial activities and car traffic are important contributors of ethylene in the environment.
In addition presence of significant ethylene concentrations were detected along the sea transport route.
These data indicated that ethylene may be present intermittently through the entire handling and transport chain at concentrations high enough to affect fruit quality
