Abstract
Attitudes and perceptions are forces that mould production systems in all parts of the world.
Kiwifruit production in New Zealand has not been immune, in fact as a small industry dependent on export it has been exposed to global trends in international markets.
At the other end of the spectrum the attitudes of growers affect the uptake of new information and products.
There is the potential for conflict between what the industry expects of participating growers and market expectations.
In turn both reality and perceptions are not fixed but alter over time, increasing the likelihood that perceptions do not match actuality.
Pest control has been a central focus for both producers and consumers alike, and in New Zealand pest control on kiwifruit has undergone a dramatic change this decade, with the adoption of the KiwiGreen system.
This paper examines the forces of change and some of the perceptions and misconceptions that have arisen with these changes.
Examples are also given of some of the steps taken to ease the implementation of change.
