Abstract
The kiwifruit industry throughout most of the world is based on cultivars of Actinidia deliciosa derived from a single importation of seed into New Zealand early this century.
One fruiting cultivar, ‘Hayward’, has large fruit and the flavour and storage life of its fruit are much superior to those of the fruit of other cultivars. ‘Hayward’ is still the predominant fruiting cultivar of A. deliciosa, but other cultivars are now being selected in China and elsewhere, often for specific purposes.
Different pollenisers have been selected for different kiwifruit growing areas.

Cultivars of the closely related species A. chinensis are now being grown in a number of countries as well as in their homeland, China.
Cultivars have also been selected from breeding programs in France and New Zealand.
Commercial marketing of a New Zealand selection of A. chinensis, ‘Hort16A’ will begin in 1999.
