THE INFLUENCE OF SPRINKLER IRRIGATION ON YIELDS OF SOME VEGETABLE CROPS IN THE REGION OF BYDGOSZCZ, POLAND

Abstract
Results of 24 one-year field experiments on sprinkler irrigation of 7 vegetable crops have been presented in the paper.
The trials were carried out during the years 1975-1998 at the three localities (Kruszyn Krajeński, Mochełek, Wierzchucinek) situated near Bydgoszcz in Poland.
The average long-term effects of overhead irrigation of the crops (increases of marketable yields caused by irrigation) were as follows: 200 % – carrot, 176 % – red beet, 119 % – snap bean, 39 % – squash, 34 % – cucumber, 27 % – zuccini, 15 % – tomato.
Better irrigation effects were obtained on soils characterized by the small water capacity (Kruszyn Krajeński – carrot, red beet, snap bean) as compared to those with the larger one (Mochełek – cucumber, Wierzchucinek – tomato). On the loose sandy soils the sprinkler irrigation use was the basic cropping factor of the vegetables.
The highest water use efficiency was 1.40, 1.38 and 1.32 tons of yield increasing per 10 mm of applied irrigation for carrot cv. ‘Perfekcja’, squash cv.’Bambino’ and squash cv. ‘Melonowa Żółta’, respectively.
