Abstract
Olive irrigation in Extremadura is characterized by limited water resources.
A first year result from a sustained water application in a traditional olive orchard is exposed and compared with a non-irrigated treatment.
The field experiment was established at Badajoz (Spain) in a mature olive orchard in its non-bearing year.
The applied water amount was 152.2 mm and was applied at constant doses without saving the soil water availability.
The fruit fresh growth time-course was slightly different between irrigated and non-irrigated olive trees.
However the fruit dry growth was similar.
There were no differences in olive production per tree at harvest.
Tree size increased along the season in the irrigated treatment.
Predawn leaf water potential showed minimum values close to -0.8 MPa during summer in the irrigated trees, and close –3 MPa in the non-irrigated treatment.
The experiment shows the interest of the application of deficit irrigation programs in the case of limited water resources.
