Abstract
The biological approach has been considered one of the efficient strategies in rationalizing water-use in crop production.
It includes domestication of drought resistant plant species and breeding for drought-tolerance in crop plants.
Breeding for earliness with enhanced yield potential could also be useful in achieving rationalization of water use.
The present study indicated that the best dry-seed crop of tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius) line Neb#19 can be produced with irrigation at 2 to 3 week-intervals under the high temperature conditions of Assiut, Egypt.
The irrigation intervals were when 60 to 65% of the available soil water was depleted.
Potentially useful earliness was found in three new cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) breeding lines that have seeds similar in color to the standard cv ’Cream 7’. They produced dry-seed crop 3 to 4 weeks earlier than cv ‘Cream 7’. One third of the number of irrigation frequencies could be saved in the production of these lines compared to the standard cv ‘Cream 7’. Larger seed size and dry-seed yield than the cv ‘Cream 7’ were obtained in these lines.
