Abstract
A research was carried out to determine the developmental characteristics of seed-propagated Oreopanax capitatus (Araliaceae) plants.
New leaves were produced in flushes (growth units = GU). Flowering occured at least after two years from sowing and determined development of 5-12 apical shoots.
From the base of the trunk also developed 1-8 new shoots.
The number of leaves per GU increased with the number of GU on each plant axis.
Except on first GU of the trunk a reduction of petiole length, blade length and blade width occurred from the bottom to the top of each GU. Width/length of the blade was different depending on the type of plant axis and on flower differentiation.
Leaf width on each type of plant axis usually increased with the number of its GU. Conclusions are reported on best management of plants used for cut leaf production and on variability of leaf morphology.
