THE EFFECTS OF HEAT PRE-TREATMENTS AND INCUBATION TEMPERATURE ON GERMINATION OF CISTUS CRETICUS CRETICUS SEEDS

To efficiently, overcome seed coat dormancy and propagate C. creticus creticus, seeds were pre-treated with air at 80, 100, 120, and 150 °C, for 5-30 min or with boiling water for 35 sec or 1 min followed by incubation in plastic Petri dishes at 10, 15, or 20 °C, without light, for 7 weeks. resulted in 79 % (30 min pre-treatment at 80 °C, incubation at 20 °C), 90 % (5 min pre-treatment at 100 °C, incubation at 20 °C), 79 % (5 min pre-treatment at 120 °C, incubation at 20 °C), and 72 % (5 min pre-treatment at 150 °C, incubation at 20 °C) cumulative germination. Soaking of seeds in boiling water for 35 sec or 1 min showed the highest rates of germination by 96 %, or 74 % within 4 days, respectively.
Scarification with sulfuric acid for 10, 15, or 30 min followed by incubation 20 °C, resulted in only 25, 17, and 26 % germination, respectively.
Low germination (about 13 %) rates were obtained following seed pre treatment with GA₃. Soaking in boiling water, and germination conditions of 20 °C in dark gave early, uniform and high germination.
