Abstract
The purpose of this experiment was to check the behaviour of specially late flowering almond cvs of Turkish and foreign origin in various parts of southeast Anatolia.
In this paper only the results of the K. Maras (transition ecology between the Mediterranean and eastern Anatolia) experiment will be presented.
In the experiment, 7 Turkish (late flowering: 101-9, 101-13, 101-23, 300-1 and early flowering: 48-1, 48-2, 48-5) and 16 foreign cultivars (‘Butte’, ‘Cristomorto’, ‘Drake’, ‘Ferragnès’, ‘Ferraduel’, ‘Fritz’, ‘Genco’, ‘Padre’, ‘Picantili’, ‘Primorski’, ‘Ruby’, ‘Sonora’, ‘Texas’, ‘Tuono’ and ‘Yaltinski’) were used. ‘Nonpareil’ was used as control.
All the trees were budded on bitter almond seedlings and were drip irrigated.
In this experiment tree flowering and vegetation periods, density of flower buds, fruit setting and diameter growth of the plants were determined.
According to the results, the latest flowering cvs and types in 2000 were ‘Picantili’, 101-13, 101-23 and 300-1 and in 2001 ‘Cristomorto’, ‘Ferragnès’, 300-1, 101-13 and ‘Ferraduel’. It is interesting to note that all the experimental cultivars flowered and set fruit 2 years after their planting.
The highest flower-bud density was observed in ‘Padre’, ‘Butte’, ‘Ferraduel’, 300-1, ‘Ferragnès’ and ‘Picantili’. The highest scion diameter growth per season was measured in Fritz.
