EUPHORBIA RINGSPOT VIRUS, A NEW VIRUS IN EUPHORBIA MILII X LOPHOGONA

Abstract
In Euphorbia milii x lophogona plants from a grower in western Germany a heavy disease occurred which was characterized by ringshaped chlorotic spots on leaves, leaf and flower deformations, and growth reduction.
The disease could be transmitted to the E. hybrid and to a cultivar of E. milii by grafting, by Myzus persicae in a nonpersistent manner, and mechanically by cutting with the same knife first diseased and then healthy stems.
Transmission to 20 herbaceous test plants from 6 families was not achieved.
Electron microscopy of diseased leaves showed the presence of flexuous particles about 750 nm long, and in ultrathin sections the occurrence of pinwheels and laminated inclusions which resembled those induced by several potyviruses.
As the inclusions occurred only in epidermal cells and as the host range of the virus was found to be very restricted, it is concluded that this virus has not previously been described.
It is tentatively designated Euphorbia ringspot virus.
