Abstract
Extract of the root of Croton pierrei Gagnep. was studied for their cytotoxic activity.
Dichloromethane and methanol extracts were found to be strongly active against KB, BC and NCI-H187 cell lines with ED50 of 0.05-4.03 µg/ml.
Fractionation of dichloromethane extract led us to isolate friedelin (1), stigmasterol (2), heptadecanoin (3) and isoscopoletin (4). The chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic methods, mainly 1D and 2D NMR. This is the first report of the chemical constituents from this plant.
