Abstract
Tree canopy cover governs radiation interception and thereby sets orchard yield potential and crop water requirement.
This study investigated the variation of tree canopy cover between micro-irrigated peach orchards in the Goulburn valley.
Tree cover in 56 mature (
4 year old) commercial orchards was analysed using aerial photographs.
Cover ranged from 20 to 66% (coefficient of variation = 20%, n = 56). Adjusting management to cope with this orchard-to-orchard variability in tree cover is important for environmental protection and optimising production.
The potential for large water savings using irrigation management practices that account for tree cover is discussed.
