Abstract
In 1972, New Zealand produced 10% of apples grown in the Southern Hemi¬sphere.
A 1972 economic investigation of New Zealand apple production by the Market Research Centre at Massey University, New Zealand, predicted an increase in national apple exports of 100% over the next eight years.
The bases for the projection were increases in both yield and area.
Instead, apple exports rose by a modest 28%. With the benefit of hindsight, this paper analyses why projections in export growth were not realized, and do this in the context of the changes in Southern Hemisphere apple production over that time.
A brief overview of trends in apple production in the subsequent two decades is also given.
