Abstract
Citrus cultivars are sensitive to micro-climate.
Temperature is the climatic factor that most affects fruit quality characteristics in citrus.
Heat unit mapping is a decision support system developed by New South Wales Department of Primary industries (DPI). This system has the potential to identify microclimates best suited for growing new and introduced citrus cultivars within the wide range of climatic zones found in Australia.
Major spatial products produced for citrus include starting day of the growing season, the time required to accumulate the target growing degree days (GDD) for defined periods (number of days). Target GDD is calculated for specified number of days commencing from either the estimated starting day of the growing season or from the time of petal fall.
GDD calculations, made on a real time daily basis for different regions have also been developed to estimate number of days to maturity or the time needed to accumulate a specific GDD requirement for maturation of citrus cultivars.
