Abstract
In mild winter climates, peach seed stratification under cool temperatures is used for breaking the physiologic dormancy.
For breeding purposes, collecting all the seeds of each progeny at the same time can reduce labor and costs.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of the fruit maturity stage on chilling requirement of seeds of three peach cultivars.
The work was carried out at the Department of Plant Science, Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Viçosa (MG), Brazil, from November to January, 2004. The experiment was assigned in an entirely randomized design, with a 3 x 4 factorial scheme (cultivars x maturity stage), with three replications and 10 seeds per plot.
The fruits used were obtained by open pollination of Campinas 1, Biuti and Ouromel, in four fruit maturity stages (green (one week before firm maturity stage), firm maturity (harvest time), full ripe and one week after full ripe). The seeds were extracted from the endocarp and stored (5±1°C and 85±2.5% RH). Fruit maturity stage influenced the chilling requirement of peach seeds.
Seeds of fruit harvested one week after the full ripe stage showed lower Chill Unit requirement. Campinas 1 and Ouromel peaches needed less Chill Units for germination.
