EFFECT OF CROP ROW ORIENTATION ON THE PASSIVE VENTILATION OF A PLASTIC GREENHOUSE

Abstract
In Mediterranean plastic greenhouses the use of lateral passive ventilators is common.
It is normal practice with high, vertically trained crops to arrange the plant rows to be perpendicular to the ventilated greenhouse lateral wall, assuming that this disposition improves ventilation.
A study analyzing the effects of crop row orientation (perpendicular and parallel to the ventilated wall) on the greenhouse microclimate was conducted in a parral type multispan, which was also equipped with roof ventilators and a fogging system.
The crop rows were simulated with nets.
The results indicated that the disposition of the crop rows has no significant effect on greenhouse ventilation in low-speed wind conditions.
The influence of lateral ventilators is limited to the greenhouse area very close to the lateral walls.
