Abstract
New plant forms of valuable quality were created by the method of remote hybridization and reciprocal cross-breeding of parsley (Petroselinum hortense Hoffm.) and celery (Apium graveolens L.), namely:

  1. A hybrid plant of leaf-parsley, type ‘Festival 68’, the leaves and leaf-stalks of which have intermediate anatomic structure and chemical composition.
This plant produces 50 – 80 % more leaves than the common parsley cultivars.
The flavour and consistence of the leaves are similar to those of parsley.

  2. New forms of leaf-celery containing greater amounts of vitamin C, carotene (provitamin A), chlorophyll, amino-acids and essential oils than their parent components.
Their consistency is more tender than that of celery and may be used like fresh parsley.

  3. New plant forms with compact roots, which do not become hollow, were also developed.
