Abstract
New plant forms of valuable quality were created by the method of remote hybridization and reciprocal cross-breeding of parsley (Petroselinum hortense Hoffm.) and celery (Apium graveolens L.), namely:
- A hybrid plant of leaf-parsley, type ‘Festival 68’, the leaves and leaf-stalks of which have intermediate anatomic structure and chemical composition.
This plant produces 50 – 80 % more leaves than the common parsley cultivars.
The flavour and consistence of the leaves are similar to those of parsley. - New forms of leaf-celery containing greater amounts of vitamin C, carotene (provitamin A), chlorophyll, amino-acids and essential oils than their parent components.
Their consistency is more tender than that of celery and may be used like fresh parsley. - New plant forms with compact roots, which do not become hollow, were also developed.
