Abstract
The first prototype of a light emitting diode (LED)-artificial sunlight source system, which is capable of producing a spectral power distribution (SPD) that approximates ground level sunlight (GLS) as well as arbitrarily modified SPDs, has been developed.
Currently, we are making substantial improvements to this initial LED-artificial sunlight source system, which include extending the wavelength range from 400-900 nm to 380-940 nm and increasing the light output of the system for an irradiated area of 7 cm2 from 25 W m-2 for 400-900 nm to 111 W m-2 for 380-940 nm.
To achieve the desired static and dynamic SPDs, we are applying different voltages to the LEDs and using 32 different peak wavelengths (385 to 940 nm). Moreover, the system is capable of producing light output, which varies with time in two-second intervals by altering the voltage supply to the LEDs.
Herein, we present the configuration of the present system, the method used to produce the desired static and dynamic SPDs, and operational tests of the improved system.
