Abstract
Recent evidence suggests an important role of nitric oxide (NO) in plant development and tolerance to environmental stress.
In the work, the influence of NO on ATPase, PPase, redox system and ROS-scavenging enzymes in plasma membrane and/or tonoplast in cucumber roots was studied.
The function of NO greatly depended on its level, low NO significantly increased activities of ROS-scavenging enzymes and protected ATPase, PPase from damaging, therefore might enhance the tolerance to stress conditions and do good to the development of plant.
While high NO led to serious oxidative stress of plasma membrane and tonoplast and resulted in great accumulation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), which might be responsible for dramatically inhibited activities of ATPase and PPase.
