Abstract
The quality of grapes is determined by berry colour, size and pulp content.
To achieve these quality parameters, the growers use various bio-regulators.
Indiscriminate use of CPPU, one of the commonly used bioregulator to increase berry size, leads to abnormal growth of the pedicel and sometimes causes berry scorching.
The present experiment was, therefore, conducted to study the effect of CPPU on bunch and berry development of Thompson Seedless grafted on Dogridge rootstock.
CPPU was used at 1 and 2 ppm on three levels of shoot length, i.e., 3 to 6, 7 to 10 and >10 leaves above the bunch.
The average area of leaf was 180–200 cm2.
The data on berry and bunch characters differed significantly except TSS and acidity of the berries.
The application of 2 ppm CPPU on shoots with >10 leaves above the bunch showed the superiority over the rest of the treatments.
The treatment of application of 1 ppm CPPU on >10 leaves above the bunch was also on par with the treatment of 2 ppm CPPU on >10 leaves above the bunch.
Therefore, it is concluded that to achieve berry quality by using CPPU the number of leaves available per bunch (overall leaf area of the vine) should be at least 10 or more above the bunch.
No abnormalities due to application of CPPU were found in any of the treatments.
