Abstract
Among the phytophagous mites, eriophyiid gall mite Colomerus vitis (Pagenstecher) is very common and destructive species forming galls on the foliage and stunting the growth of berries in Kashmir Valley.
Two predatory mites, Amblydromella viniferae (Rather) and A. dalii (Rather) were observed in greater numbers in the galls of this species.
Vines harbouring large number of these predatory mites bore very less number of galls on the foliage.
Screening of different grape varieties revealed that Sahibi, Khalili, Hussaini and Anab-e-Shahi are resistant to vine gall mite in the State.
Himrod proved to be very susceptible variety.
Predatory mites, viz. Euseius vignus Rishi and Rather and E. insanus Khan and Chaudhri dominated both in vineyards and surrounding vegetation.
Both these species along with Agistemus herbarius (Kuznestov and Wainstein) were seen actively feeding upon eggs and nymphs of spider mites. Lasioseius sp. (Ascidae) and Paracheyletia pyriformis (Banks) (Cheyletidae) were also seen associated with phytophagous mites, though in low numbers.
Surrounding vegetation if managed properly can improve the biological control of grapevine mite pests by providing refuge, hibernating sites and alternative food sources to predatory mites.
