BIOLOGICAL AND ECONOMICAL VALUE OF NATURALLY SPREAD POPULATION OF BLACK MULBERRY (MORUS NIGRA L.) IN SLOVAKIA

Abstract
In Slovakia the black mulberry is rarely grown as minor fruit. 854 naturally spread genotypes of the black mulberry (Morus nigra L.) population in the locality of tiavnicke vrchy in Central Slovakia were monitored.
Up to one thousand trees in Slovakia could be found.
The prevailing number of these trees are localized in the village Pukanec, where there are presently around 500 producing trees available and the majority of these trees are more than 200 years old.
Budding of black mulberry starts in late spring and flowering half of May.
Fruits ripe gradually from July through September and are mainly used for direct consumption.
Morphometric analyses express distinct differences between the selected genotypes in fruit length (10.7-27.2 mm), fruit width (9.2-16.3 mm), fruit weight (0.62 – 6.78 g), in leaf length (65.7-162.3 mm), leaf width (62.4-157.7 mm), stem leaf length (11.6-31.9 mm), in main bud length (3.78-10.34 mm), main bud width (1.28-6.16 mm), in male flower length (14.82-37.22 mm), male flower width (5.34-8.10 mm), female flower length (8.40-16.28 mm) and in female flower width (5.20-8.74 mm). Considerable differences were also determined in the shape of fruits, leaves, buds and seeds.
