POLLEN–PISTIL AFFINITY OF EIGHT NEW POMEGRANATE CLONES (PUNICA GRANATUM L.)

Abstract
This study analysed pollen-pistil affinity of 8 new pomegranate clones (PTO1, PTO2, PTO4, PTO7, PTO8, CRO1, ME14 and ME15). Plant material was selected from the regions of Alicante and Murcia (Southeastern Spain), which are the largest pomegranate yielding areas of the European Union.
Several tests were conducted on 1646 hermaphrodite flowers for two consecutive years (1998-2000) to check the main pollination habit as well as the levels of self-compatibility.
Self-pollination and cross-pollination (both wind and insect ones) were analysed as well.
Significant differences were obtained among all clones regarding pollinated flowers and fruit set.
Whereas the percentage of self-pollination was 79.67%, the percentage of cross-pollination was 20.38% (12.76 % wind pollinated and 7.62% insect pollinated).
