CHILLING REQUIREMENT EVALUATION OF PEACH HYBRIDS OBTAINED AMONG CULTIVARS WITH HIGH AND LOW CHILLING REQUIREMENTS

Abstract
The introduction of high chilling requirement genotypes can be useful to widen the genetic base of the low chilling requirement germplasm, mainly considering fruit quality.
However, the hybrids among high and low chilling requirement genotypes can have poor adaptation in mild areas, with erratic budbreak and flowering.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the chilling requirement of peach hybrid progenies obtained among low and high chilling requirement cultivars.
The work was carried out at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2005. The evaluated progenies were Alô Doçura × Zaragozano Rojo; Aurora-1 × Calanda San Miguel; Relíquia × Miraflores; Setembrino × Carson; Setembrino × Zaragozano Rojo; Setembrino × Adafuel; Talismã × Sudanell-2 and S.388-1 × Miraflores. Low chilling genotypes were used as female parent and high chilling as male parents.
The high chilling requirement genotypes were introduced as pollen from the Estación Experimental de Aula Dei (CSIC), Spain.
Each hybrid progeny had from two to eleven plants.
The chilling requirement was evaluated through the detached twigs methodology.
The detached twigs were submitted to 410, 460, 510, and 560 chill hours.
Once submitted to the chill treatments, the detached twigs were transferred to a greenhouse and, after 21 days, the budbreak and flowering were evaluated.
The twigs present low budbreak (<30.9%) and flowering (<7.94%), indicating high chilling requirement of the hybrids.
The results indicate that more recombination generations are necessary before selecting low chilling requirement (<400 chill units) genotypes.
