MINING AND DIGITAL EXPRESSION PROFILING OF FURANOCOUMARIN BIOSYNTHESIS GENES IN CITRUS

Abstract
We identified all unigenes representing possible functional genes in the furanocoumarin (FC) biosynthetic pathways, through sequence blast of known genes and keyword search of designated gene names.
The in silico mining yielded a total of 49 unigenes from Csi10, a Citrus sinensis assembly in the NCBI. Based on the count and distribution of ESTs in different tissues, approximate gene expression profiles were inferred and summarized, in terms of tissue specificity and expression differentiation.
Many were expressed only in fruits and/or flowers.
Genomic heterozygosity and expressed differentiation were found among some genes, likely facilitating further genetic mapping of those genes and identification of key genes controlling FC biosynthesis in grapefruit.
