VIRUS DISEASES IN ORNAMENTALS

Abstract
The organizing committee of the 12th International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants kindly invited me to give a presentation during the opening session on April 21st, 2008 in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
It was their request to get a general approach to the economic aspects of virus diseases for ornamental producers, and from my position as president of the Royal General Bulbgrowers Association (KAVB) and secretary general of the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), they were of the opinion I was the right person to present this.
Since virus diseases in bulbous crops are indeed a major factor, both for production and for global trade, our bulbgrowers organization does spend quite some time on discussions about bulb quality, control measures, research and phytosanitary issues related to viruses.
And of course quite some money is spent for research and quality inspection.
In this article the major aspects of my presentation are summarized.
