Abstract
In many world selection centers, there is a continuous creation of new cultivars characterized by high productivity, fruit quality and resistance to unsuitable condi¬tions.
The genetic potential in the strawberries is higher if the ecological conditions suit the necessities of the adequate assortment.
Because of this it is necessary to do detailed research into the ecological conditions of the region, before any mass production of a certain cultivar.
With the purpose of introducing new cultivars in production, three promising strawberry cultivars bred by New Fruits, Cesena have been tested: Alba, Maya and Roxana. The trial plantings were established on 23 September 2006 in the region of Kocani, the eastern part and also in Tetovo, the western part of the Republic of Macedonia, using imported green plants rooted in pots.
Research was conducted in the period of 2006-2009. During the investigation height of the plants, number of leaves per plant, period of blooming and ripening, number of flowers and fruits per plant, cropping pattern, yield, average fruit weight, content of soluble dry matters, total acid, pH and ascorbic acid were observed.
The Maya cultivar is the most vigorous by means of height and number of leaves, whereas the Alba cultivar is the least vigorous.
The Alba cultivar has the earliest blooming and ripening.
This cultivar ripens about 5-7 days earlier than the other cultivars.
On average for the three years, the Alba cultivar had the lowest number of flowers and fruits per plant, whereas the Maya cultivar had the largest number of flowers and Roxana had the largest number of marketable fruits.
On average for the three years and both regions, the Roxana cultivar had the highest yield (614 g/plant), whereas the Maya cultivar had the lowest yield (463.9 g/plant).
